One of the big stories on this side of the world is the recent attack in Paris on the premises of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Two gunmen murdered twelve people. Hatred for Charlie Hebdo 's cartoons, which made jokes about Islamic leaders as well as Muhammad, is considered to be the principal motive for the massacre.
It reminds me of an interview I heard on Radio New
Zealand last year on freedom of speech. The speaker said words to the effect
- We all believe in
freedom of speech when it is people we like saying things we agree with. The
real test of our belief in free speech is ‘are we prepared to have people we
loath say things we abhor?’
