There are loads of things on offer at the local
libraries. This Wednesday Steve Cole is going to be at the one which is about a
25 minute walk from us. For those not in the loop he wrote, among other things,
the Astrosaurs series of children’s books.
Today we went to a mask making workshop. The kids made
masks and then there were some drama ‘warm up’ activities before they did some
‘proper’ drama.

Now, before I recount this story, please remember that
our kids are used to living on a 3 acre property when, if they yell as loud as
they can, they are only just able to be heard by the closest neighbours. For
the last three weeks, since our arrival in London, they have been repeatedly told
to be quiet and not to walk heavily. We are surrounded by people. We have
people above us, below us, to our left, and to our right. So keep in mind they
were going a little stir crazy.
The facilitator asked individuals to call out a letter
of the alphabet. Then everyone was to think of something that starts with that
letter and either pose or move in an appropriate manner. Other kids were
Kittens, Dolls, Flowers, and Clouds. My kids were Pigs, Toilets, and Dung!
They were then asked to say their name and, at the
same time, do an action. Everyone else would then say the child’s name and copy
their action.
The group of about 11 or 12 people were standing in a
circle almost shoulder to shoulder i.e. not a very large circle. The first
child waved, one scratched her head, another nodded her head. Joel’s action was
to fall forward onto the floor. There was a brief pause from the other kids as
they looked at the facilitator who, to this point, had been encouraging of
every idea any child had offered. Following in that vein she said, “Great
action, Joel” and everyone fell forward…very carefully… trying to land on the
floor and not on somebody else! Luka then followed suited with a varied, hip-circling fall! Then Maria with nodding.
New Game
Grace has several games she likes to play. ‘Mums and
Dads’ is by far the most popular. A recent new comer is ‘Weddings’; with Penny
and Danny’s recent wedding and Char and Matt’s coming up it’s on her mind. She
takes turns marrying different members of the family or soft toy community.
There is always someone who is the father-of-the-bride to give the bride away.
Another game is ‘Doctors and Patients.’
A few minutes ago I was told about a new game –
‘Meetings.’ I asked Grace how to play it

You go to a
meeting in the dungeon (the kids’ downstairs bedroom) then you go back to your
office and do work on the computer
Talk about a sophisticated three year old
